Gary Brown – Discipleship, the way Jesus did it

Seminar Description:

Could it be that the way Jesus trained His men is just as biblically important as what He said?

We cherish the words of our Lord, but what about His methods? Think about it. Jesus launched the most successful movement in the history of mankind. When Jesus told His guys to “Go, and make disciples”, it was not a command to only teach what He taught. The only model the first followers of Jesus had was the model Jesus used to train them.

Of course, the world has done a lot of changing since the first century, but is there a way to implement Christ’s strategy in the 21st century?

Pastor Gary Brown has been on a four-year journey seeking to find that 21st century connection to the timeless method our Savior used to start a movement that is still flourishing 2,000 years later. Yes, one cannot discount the power of the Holy Spirit in the continuation of God’s plan. But, can Jesus’ methods just be ignored?

Some good questions to ponder.

Couldn’t Jesus have gone from His baptism and the wilderness experience, straight to the cross? Couldn’t Jesus have saved a lot of time and effort, gone to the cross and skipped to Acts? If what Jesus came to do was just a function of the movement of the Holy Spirit, wouldn’t the upper room have been enough? Why did He need to spend three years with twelve guys?

Why did Jesus have these men follow Him around for three years? Couldn’t they just attend a weekly Bible study? A worship service? A small group? Why didn’t Jesus just build a large building, gather a large crowd and launch the church, Himself?

The power of the Holy Spirit was essential to Jesus’ mission on this earth. It was the Holy Spirit who led Jesus to live with twelve men for three years. Sure, Jesus had other purposes for His three-year ministry, but the main purpose was to equip twelve guys to launch His church.

It is impossible for a Christian to take three years off to dedicate to discipling. So, how do we take the timeless principles and methodology Christ taught and demonstrated 2,000 years ago and apply them to the 21st century?

How do we do discipleship the way Jesus did it?
